Edwin McCain on The Masked Singer: “It’s Awesome to Not Have to Worry About What I’m Wearing”
Singer Edwin McCain recently appeared on season 13 of The Masked Singer, performing as Nessy and entertaining audiences with his hit songs. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, McCain opened up about his experience on the show, his musical journey, and his personal life.
According to McCain, performing on The Masked Singer was a relief, as it allowed him to focus on singing without worrying about his appearance. “It’s awesome, because I normally sing with my eyes closed,” he said. “The other thing is, I didn’t have to think about what I was wearing. I didn’t have to worry if my hair was all mussed up or anything. It was just, jump in this costume and sing through the screen. It was fun.”
McCain’s stint on The Masked Singer came to an end on Wednesday, April 23, when he was eliminated following a close vote. Host Nick Cannon revealed that McCain’s elimination was the result of the closest vote in Masked Singer history, with less than a 1% difference between the contestants.
Despite his elimination, McCain expressed his gratitude for being part of the show. “There was so much talent on the show,” he said. “It is really an honor to be in the conversation, especially at this point in my career.” McCain, 55, also praised his fellow contestants, including Boogie Woogie, Coral, Mad Scientist Monster, and Pearl, who will continue to compete for the Golden Mask trophy.
McCain’s musical journey spans over three decades, with hits like “I’ll Be” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” He released his latest album, Lucky, in February, which marks his first collection of new music since 2011. McCain credits his friend, country singer Lee Brice, for encouraging him to make a new record.
In addition to his music career, McCain discussed his personal life, including his 25-year marriage to wife Christy. McCain revealed that Christy prefers to stay out of the spotlight, which has helped their marriage endure. “She was like, ‘If this is your circus, I don’t want to have anything to do with it. Just keep me out of it,'” he said.
McCain also talked about his children, including his daughter Tiller, who appeared in his clue package on the show. McCain joked about his daughter calling him “expert-level cringe” on the show, saying that he’s used to being embarrassing to his kids.
As McCain continues his musical journey, he’s set to tour with Train this summer. With his new album and recent appearances on The Masked Singer, McCain is proving that he’s still a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.
Reflecting on his career, McCain said, “I’m so grateful to have had it last as long as it has. And I think part of it is the fact that we’ve just been out here playing shows, and I’ve never really suffered from what I call gig snobbery.” McCain’s dedication to his craft and his family has allowed him to maintain a successful career in music.
McCain’s experience on The Masked Singer has also given him a new perspective on his music and his fans. “That song [‘I’ll Be’] is a miracle, really,” he said. “It’s such an incredible thing to have happened. The timing of that song was perfect, and just the fact that it’s still going strong almost 30 years later is really, as a songwriter, as a singer, you can only be that lucky to have a song.”
