Lionel Messi to Travel with Inter Miami for Upcoming Road Games
Inter Miami star player Lionel Messi will travel with the team for their upcoming road games against Minnesota United and the San Jose Earthquakes, according to a report from USA Today. The news comes as a relief to soccer fans in Minnesota and San Jose who were eagerly awaiting confirmation of Messi’s participation.
Messi has been dealing with some concerns regarding his fitness and mood, after being seen abruptly leaving the pitch in recent matches. However, Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano has assured fans that Messi is “fine” and that his competitive nature is nothing to be concerned about. “Well, Leo is a competitive person, that’s normal,” Mascherano said, as quoted in the USA Today article. “Those of us who have known him for a long time know how demanding he is – not only with himself, but with everything around him. But yes, he’s fine.”
Inter Miami will visit Minnesota United at Allianz Field on May 10 at 4:30 p.m. ET, followed by a match against the San Jose Earthquakes inside PayPal Park on May 14 at 10:30 p.m. ET. The team will be without midfielder Luis Suarez, who is away from the club for personal reasons, according to Mascherano. It is unclear whether Suarez will rejoin the team for the second match.
The two matches will be the last trips to the Midwest and West Coast for Messi and Inter Miami for the rest of the 2025 MLS regular season. The team has six remaining matches to play in May before turning its attention to participating in the Club World Cup. Inter Miami knows it must get through this stretch of MLS games, especially after being eliminated in the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals by Vancouver in late April.
Inter Miami is currently fourth in the Eastern Conference with 21 points, trailing Columbus Crew (24), Philadelphia Union (22), and FC Cincinnati (22) in the standings. Minnesota United, on the other hand, is second in the MLS Western Conference with 19 points from five wins, two losses, and four draws. Mascherano has warned that Minnesota will be a tough opponent, saying “Minnesota is a rival that is going through a great moment. They have started the season very well.”
The upcoming matches will be available on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV. The schedule for Inter Miami’s remaining matches in May is as follows:
