Mickey Rourke Ejected from Celebrity Big Brother Following Inappropriate Behaviour
The latest series of Celebrity Big Brother has got off to a dramatic start, with Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke being removed from the show after just six days. The 72-year-old star was given a formal warning by Big Brother for making homophobic comments directed at 21-year-old Dance Moms star JoJo Siwa, but was ultimately thrown off the show by producers for a sexual comment aimed at The Only Way is Essex star Ella Rae Wise, 24, and threatening behaviour towards Love Island contestant Chris Hughes, 32.
According to The Independent, Rourke grew irate when Hughes, in character as a pirate for a shopping task, “eyeballed” him. Rourke later apologised to Hughes, and told Big Brother he was “ashamed” of his actions and blamed it on his “short fuse”. The controversy started immediately, with Rourke “ogling” the reality show’s co-host AJ Odudu upon entering the house, which caused viewers to call for the actor to be axed from the series.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the programme told The Independent: “All Housemates receive Respect and Inclusion training and an extensive briefing from the Big Brother Senior team to prepare them for living in the House and to set out Big Brother’s expectation for appropriate behaviour and language. Housemates are monitored 24 hours a day and instances of inappropriate behaviour are dealt with appropriately and timely.” Rourke’s representatives declined to comment.
The incident that led to Rourke’s departure occurred during a disagreement with Chris Hughes, with Big Brother describing his language and behaviour as “threatening and aggressive”. While no physical altercation took place, Rourke made a sexual remark to Ella Rae Wise, which was considered to be unacceptable. Big Brother sternly called him to the Diary Room, where he apologised for his actions and took responsibility for his behaviour.
As reported by The Independent, Rourke said: “I blame myself, I know it was my bad. You know, I’ve got a short fuse and I know I upset a lot of people out there, you know. And I’m sorry for that. I’m actually ashamed of myself for getting that hot. I went over the line, you know, I did wrong. I guess, like they say, I’m a work in progress. I just wanna pack my bags and leave, you know. I wanted to leave yesterday actually but I wasn’t chosen.”
The incident has sent shockwaves around the house, with many of Rourke’s fellow contestants expressing their disappointment and distress. Ella Rae Wise told Big Brother in the Diary Room that she was still disturbed by the sexual comment he made earlier in the day, saying “I’m not a piece of meat”. Meanwhile, Donna Preston and Angellica Bell broke down in tears, while Danny Beard said he was questioning his morals for wanting to “look after” Rourke.
The series continues on Sunday at 9pm on ITV and ITVX, with viewers eagerly anticipating the next episode. As reported by The Independent, former Tory MP Michael Fabricant was eliminated during Friday night’s eviction, with many speculating that Rourke would be next to leave. However, it was announced on Saturday that Rourke “has agreed to leave” the show following a discussion with Big Brother regarding further use of inappropriate language and instances of “unacceptable behaviour”.
Celebrity Big Brother has a history of controversy, but this incident has raised questions about the show’s approach to monitoring and addressing inappropriate behaviour. As The Independent previously reported, the show’s producers have a responsibility to ensure that all contestants feel safe and respected in the house. In this case, it appears that Rourke’s behaviour crossed a line, and his removal from the show was necessary to maintain a safe and respectful environment for the other contestants.
The incident has sparked a wider conversation about behaviour and accountability in reality TV, with many calling for greater scrutiny of contestants and more robust measures to address misconduct. As the series continues, viewers will be watching closely to see how the show’s producers handle similar incidents in the future.
