Former Middlesbrough Forward Toyosi Olusanya Heading to MLS
In a surprise move, former Middlesbrough forward Toyosi Olusanya has agreed to join MLS side Houston Dynamo on a permanent deal for an undisclosed six-figure transfer fee. According to reports from The Northern Echo, Olusanya’s contract with St Mirren was due to expire at the end of this season, but the Paisley side has secured an unexpected transfer fee for the forward.
The 27-year-old forward had been with St Mirren since joining from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022. During his time with the Buddies, Olusanya has scored 19 goals across the last two seasons, after a difficult start that saw him loaned out to Arbroath. As reported by The Northern Echo, Olusanya’s performances have caught the eye of Houston Dynamo, who have agreed to pay a six-figure transfer fee to secure his services.
Olusanya’s move to Houston Dynamo marks a significant step up in his career, after playing in England’s non-league ranks until being signed by Middlesbrough in 2021. During his time with Boro, Olusanya made just three senior appearances, all of which came as a substitute in the early weeks of the 2021-22 season. However, his move to St Mirren proved to be a successful one, and he has been a key player for the Buddies over the past two seasons.
The move has been welcomed by St Mirren manager Steven Robinson, who has praised Olusanya’s work ethic and commitment to the club. As quoted in The Northern Echo, Robinson said: "Toyosi has deserved his move. It’s something that has come out of the blue, but it’s a fantastic opportunity for him. He’s conducted himself so well since he’s come to the club and proved what a good player and signing he’s been. He deserves every success going forward."
The transfer fee secured by St Mirren is also a significant boost for the club, with just five games remaining of the current campaign.
