Mishal Husain’s Life After Emotional BBC Exit
Mishal Husain, the renowned BBC newsreader, has certainly kept herself busy since her emotional departure from Radio 4. According to a report by the Bristol Post, Husain has been making waves in the media industry with her new role as the editor-at-large of Bloomberg Weekend Edition, fronting a brand new interview series.
The 52-year-old host had an impressive career with the BBC, working alongside co-presenters Nick Robinson and Justin Webb, as well as former Today hosts Sarah Montague and John Humphrys. In December 2024, Husain bidded farewell to Radio 4 with an emotional message, closing a significant chapter in her life. Before signing off for good, her career was celebrated with a recap on some of her most cherished moments as a warm song played to finish up her time on the show.
As reported by the Bristol Post, Husain announced her decision to walk away, sharing a statement with fans confirming she would be stepping down. One month prior to her exit, Husain penned: “My time at the BBC has involved many memorable moments, going to places I would never otherwise have seen, witnessing history and being part of live, national conversation on Radio 4.” She added: “I will always be grateful for the opportunities the BBC gave me, and wish the organisation and everyone who is part of it the very best.”
The former BBC broadcaster has since become the editor-at-large of Bloomberg Weekend Edition, fronting a brand new interview series. As per the Bristol Post, Husain is known for hosting Today on BBC Radio 4 and was the first ethnic minority woman and the first Muslim presenter on the show. She followed in the footsteps of her mother, who was also a journalist, working as a producer for Pakistan Television Corporation and her father a doctor.
Husain’s grandfather, Syed Shahid Hamid, worked as the first Director-General of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence. At the age of just 2, Husain, along with her parents and younger brother, moved to the United Arab Emirates. It was here that she attended private education, in a British school located in Abu Dhabi.
The Bristol Post reported that after a decade had past, Husain moved back to Britain to further her education, firstly attending Cobham Hall in Kent before furthering her studies in Law at Cambridge University. Husain then went on to complete her Master’s degree in Italy, Florence at International and Comparative Law at the European University Institute.
Husain’s big break landed when she joined Bloomberg Television in 1996 as a producer and presenter before turning her attentions to a role at the BBC, with the budding star moving quickly up the ranks before finding her spot on the Today show, next to John Humphrys. Some of her biggest career highlights include interviews with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi and not to mention an entire host of high-profile political leaders.
In 2024, Husain embarked on a journey through Uzbekistan, in hope of uncovering some hidden truths about her 14th century ancestor, to discover more about her heritage and roots. Although, Husain did not discover the records she’d set out to retrieve, she did invite her mother Sharma along, with the pair strengthening their bond through the discovery of their heritage.
The Bristol Post reported that in 2024, Husain published her first memoir Broken Threads: My Family From Empire to Independence, which quickly swooped to the top of book charts as a bestseller. Her book set out to explore the lives of her grandparents, who experienced the political and social upheaval of the Partition, and how that event lived on to not only shape their lives but their descendants too.
Back in 2024, Husain became the bookies favourite to take over the reigns from BBC newsreader Huw Edwards after he resigned following an allegation he’d paid a young person for sexually explicit photos. The news spread quickly that Husain could be about to step into the Royal role with BBC releasing a statement at that time to shut down rumours, they said: “As you’d expect, we regularly rehearse various news scenarios, and Husain’s been one of the many presenters who’s participated in rehearsals. There’s no more to it than that.”
That did indeed prove to be true, with Clive Myrie and Reeta Chakrabarti, both being appointed as the new Royal hosts. Husain is set to appear on an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? which airs on Tuesday, April 29 at 9pm on BBC One.
