Newey: Fixing Aston Martin’s Weak Links and Shaping a 2026 Comeback

Aston Martin’s Technical Team Adviser, Adrian Newey, has revealed that he has been concentrating on the 2026 car, rather than trying to turn around the team’s struggling 2023 season. According to formula1.com, Newey has been focusing on next year’s car, with only occasional “lunchtime chats” with the team working on this year’s machine.

In an exclusive interview with formula1.com, Newey explained his approach, saying: “I’m quite disciplined like that I suppose. I tend to be, as I said earlier, a bit tunnel vision. So I’ve been really concentrating on the 2026 car. But yes, doing lunchtime chats, there’s a small core team that’s working on the 2025 car and will do for a few months yet.” He added that the team will have an upgrade planned for around the Silverstone Grand Prix.

Newey has been at the Monaco Grand Prix, his first appearance at a race track this year. He has been observing the team’s debriefs, but mainly acting as an observer, while building relationships with the drivers and trackside team. As formula1.com reports, Newey will be taking a keen interest in how the team’s rivals have developed their cars over the winter.

The team’s performance this season has been a concern, with Aston Martin scoring just twice in Grands Prix so far. Fernando Alonso has come close to a top-10 finish on several occasions, but has yet to achieve one. As formula1.com notes, Newey’s role at Aston Martin will be focused on improving the team’s weak points, and he has already begun assessing the team’s tools and methods.

Newey’s approach to his new role at Aston Martin is clear: he will be focusing on building a strong relationship with the team, and taking a detailed interest in how the team’s rivals are performing. As he told formula1.com, “It’s the first time I’ve seen these cars at all. And I haven’t actually spent very long studying photographs of them either. So, for me, it will be interesting to see what everybody’s been up to over the winter in the first few races and see how the teams have changed their cars relative to last year.”

Newey’s experience and expertise will undoubtedly be a valuable asset to Aston Martin, and his focus on the 2026 car suggests that the team is planning for the long-term. As formula1.com reports, Newey will be roaming the grid on Sundays, taking notes and observing his rivals, as he looks to help Aston Martin improve its performance in the years to come.
