North West 200: Dunlop and Todd Share Superbike Honours
The 2025 North West 200 came to a close on a dramatic note, with Davey Todd and Michael Dunlop sharing the spoils in the superbike class. According to The Race, Todd doubled up in the superstock class, while Richard Cooper took two wins in the supersport and supertwins classes.
The first superbike race of the day was marred by controversy, as Dunlop emerged victorious after a phenomenal charge through the field. However, he was initially handed a 10-second penalty for not stopping at the chicane, which would have cost him the win. As The Race reports, “Dunlop looked set for victory in that opener as he launched a phenomenal charge through the field to hunt down leader Todd. But Dunlop was temporarily handed a 10-second penalty for not stopping as he rejoined from his chicane shortcut.” Fortunately for Dunlop, the penalty was later rescinded, much to the dismay of third-placed finisher Peter Hickman, who refused to join Dunlop and Todd on the podium.
In the second superbike race, Dunlop once again made a late charge through the field, but his BMW expired shortly after he took the lead from Todd on the final lap. As quoted in The Race, Todd secured victory after a red flag brought the day’s racing to a premature end, allowing him to take the win. Todd had already enjoyed a comfortable victory in the superstock class, where he was joined on the podium by Honda Racing’s Dean Harrison and his 8Ten Racing team-mate Hickman.
The supersport class saw Todd, Dunlop, and Harrison emerge as favourites, but it was Cooper who took the win after Todd retired with machine problems. As The Race notes, “Cooper and Harrison tangled with each other and were forced to take a grass-tracking shortcut. Thankfully staying on their bikes, they also held on to first and second ahead of the chasing Dunlop.” Cooper had earlier taken a win in the opening supertwin race, beating local rider Adam McLean.
However, the second supertwin outing ended in disaster for Cooper and McLean, who tangled and went down together on the Coast Road. This handed Paul Jordan the opportunity to take his first North West 200 victory, which he duly took ahead of Micko Sweeney and Barry Furber.
