Oxfordshire Volunteers Honored for Elderly Support Work

Volunteers Honoured for Decades of Support to Older People in Oxfordshire

A charity in Oxfordshire is celebrating the dedication of two volunteers who have spent years supporting older people in the region. Age UK Oxfordshire is recognising Jo Doherty and Ian Philipson during Volunteers’ Week, which runs from June 2 to 8, for their long-standing service to older people and unpaid carers.

According to Yahoo News, Ms Doherty, a former nurse, has volunteered with the charity’s Phone Friends service for 25 years. The scheme aims to tackle loneliness by offering regular telephone companionship to older people. Ms Doherty began volunteering after feeling isolated herself when she was forced into an early retirement due to health reasons. She now makes weekly calls to six individuals who experience loneliness, offering conversation and support. During lockdown, she doubled her efforts and spent her Fridays making additional calls to those in need.

Paul Ringer, CEO of Age UK Oxfordshire, said: "As we celebrate Volunteers’ Week, we want to thank every volunteer who gives their time to Age UK Oxfordshire. Their generosity and commitment are at the heart of everything we do, making a profound difference in the lives of older people and unpaid carers. We are committed to engaging volunteers in a way that best makes use of their diversity and passion for our cause; as part of one team." The charity described Ms Doherty as a "steadfast force of kindness," adding: "Jo’s dedication, compassion, and reliability make her a truly outstanding volunteer, demonstrating the incredible impact that human connection can have."

Mr Philipson, a digital support volunteer, is also being honoured for nearly 15 years of service. He helps older people to build confidence using technology by teaching them how to use FaceTime to reconnect with family, find local activities online, and complete online forms. His clients describe him as "approachable, patient, and kind," with one individual who had recently been bereaved saying his support had been "life-changing". The charity said his "approach is thoughtful and compassionate, always considering personal needs and necessary adjustments".

Age UK Oxfordshire is using Volunteers’ Week to highlight the importance of volunteering and to encourage others to get involved. A spokesperson for the charity said: "Volunteering is a rewarding way to give back, meet new people, and be part of a cause that truly matters." The charity offers a variety of volunteer roles, including befriending opportunities, supporting community events, and serving as trustees to help shape the organisation’s future.

The charity says there is a role for everyone, whether someone has an hour a week or more spare time to give. As Yahoo News reports, Age UK Oxfordshire is celebrating the work of its volunteers, and it is clear that the dedication and commitment of volunteers like Ms Doherty and Mr Philipson are making a real difference in the lives of older people in Oxfordshire.

The work of Age UK Oxfordshire and its volunteers is a testament to the power of community and the impact that individuals can have on the lives of others. As the charity continues to support older people and unpaid carers in the region, it is clear that the support of volunteers will remain a vital part of its work. With Volunteers’ Week underway, Yahoo News encourages anyone who is interested in making a difference to get involved and explore the volunteer opportunities available with Age UK Oxfordshire.
