Doctor Who’s Peter Hoar on Directing ‘Lucky Day’: Scary, Surprising, and Romantic
As reported by Doctor Who TV, Peter Hoar, the director behind A Good Man Goes to War and The Robot Revolution, has returned to the Whoniverse to helm the forthcoming episode Lucky Day. In an exclusive interview with Doctor Who TV, Hoar discusses his experience directing Lucky Day, working with the UNIT team, and bringing romance to Ruby Sunday.
According to Hoar, returning to Doctor Who was a "fantastic" experience, citing the positive and exciting new world he discovered. "I had my good friends around me and a very positive, exciting new world to discover," he revealed to Doctor Who TV. "I have also changed as a director, and I felt so much more confident. But my love for the show has never diminished."
The Doctor Who TV interview provides insight into the making of Lucky Day, which promises to be a thrilling episode. Hoar teased that the episode takes audiences on a journey from its unassuming beginning to a high-octane sci-fi thrill ride, complete with references to classic cinema and TV, including The Daemons and Aliens. As Doctor Who TV reported, Hoar stated, "The episode is quite a journey from its unassuming beginning to high octane sci-fi thrill ride. We had many references for this episode from all kinds of cinema and TV including Devils End from The Daemons [the Third Doctor adventure] to Aliens."
The episode features a familiar face in the UNIT team, and Hoar expressed his delight in working with them. "It was a joy! They are all superb without question," he told Doctor Who TV. "Watching them face such an extreme foe as this, then working as a team, being pushed to the edge, seeing their humanity tested to its limits… I hope will make a great episode. The cast worked so hard to bring this to life and deserve huge praise. I particularly like one shot where the three women of UNIT stand shoulder to shoulder."
The return of Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, is also a highlight of the episode, and Hoar was keen to praise the chemistry between Gibson and new cast member Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Conrad. "Jonah and Millie were a great duo," he revealed to Doctor Who TV. "Jonah fitted so smoothly into the family, and it was exciting to watch a new fresh dynamic emerge. Ruby needs a new hero and Conrad thinks he’s all that, but we discover quickly that it’s Ruby who’s better in a dangerous situation…"
As reported by Doctor Who TV, Hoar also discussed the episode’s setting, the UNIT Tower, which he described as "a huge place with a lot of visual promise." The episode’s monster, which Hoar described as "genuinely scary," was also a highlight of the production. "Would it be Doctor Who without a monster?" he quipped to Doctor Who TV. "This one is genuinely scary. And we leant right into it – one scene in particular we went full gothic horror."
In conclusion, Doctor Who TV reported that Hoar summarised the episode as "scary, surprising and romantic." Fans can catch Lucky Day on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Disney+ where available on Saturday, May 3rd.
