Raducanu Withdraws from Berlin Open with Back Issue

Emma Raducanu Withdraws from Berlin Open with Persistent Back Problem

British tennis star Emma Raducanu has announced that she will be pulling out of next week’s Berlin Tennis Open due to a lingering back problem that has been affecting her since her participation in the Strasbourg tournament last month. According to The Guardian, Raducanu has been struggling with her back and has had to take an off-court medical timeout during her quarter-final loss to Zheng Qinwen at Queen’s Club on Friday.

In her post-match comments, Raducanu revealed that her back issue has been a persistent problem for several weeks, stating: "It’s been lingering for the last few weeks and I have had back issues before. I think it’s just a vulnerability of mine. I’m not overly concerned that it’s something serious, but it’s something that’s very annoying and needs proper and careful management." This was reported by The Guardian on June 14, 2025.

Raducanu had initially planned to participate in the Berlin Tennis Open, a WTA 500 event that will feature nine of the world’s top 10 players, after being offered a wildcard entry. However, she has decided to prioritise rest and recovery to ensure she is fully fit for Wimbledon, which is just around the corner. As noted by The Guardian, this decision means she will miss out on being seeded for her home grand slam.

The 22-year-old, who won the US Open in 2021, will instead focus on regaining her fitness and confidence ahead of the Eastbourne Open, which takes place the week before Wimbledon. According to The Guardian, Raducanu is understood to be confident of playing in the Eastbourne Open, where she claimed her first victory over a top-10 player last year, defeating Jessica Pegula en route to making the fourth round at the All England Club.

Raducanu’s withdrawal from the Berlin Open is a setback for the British tennis star, who has been working hard to regain her form and fitness after a series of injuries. As quoted in The Guardian, Raducanu’s comments suggest that she is taking a cautious approach to managing her back problem, saying that it is "very annoying" but not a serious issue.

The news of Raducanu’s withdrawal from the Berlin Open was reported by The Guardian on June 14, 2025.
