Rocked and Rolled: How Ticketmaster’s Grip Crushed the Live Music Scene

Live Entertainment Industry Under Fire: The Dominance of Ticketmaster

The live entertainment industry has long been plagued by issues of affordability and availability, with fans often finding themselves priced out of seeing their favorite artists live. At the center of this storm is Ticketmaster, the dominant player in the ticketing industry, which has faced allegations of predatory pricing, misleading fees, and restrictive contracts. According to a report by The Guardian, Ticketmaster, which merged with concert promoters Live Nation in 2010 to form Live Nation Entertainment, sells around 70% of all concert tickets worldwide.

One of the primary concerns is the rising cost of concert tickets. According to The Guardian, a standing ticket to see Oasis at Wembley Stadium on their last tour in 2009 cost £44, while an equivalent ticket will now set you back £151. This increase in prices has led to calls for greater transparency and regulation in the industry. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched an investigation into breaches of consumer protection law, while Labour MP Rupa Huq proposed a bill that would enforce transparency about the availability and cost of tickets.

Ticketmaster’s dominance in the market has led to criticism from fans, artists, and politicians alike. The company’s CEO, Michael Rapino, has faced intense scrutiny, with many accusing him of prioritizing profits over fans. According to The Guardian, Rapino has defended Ticketmaster’s pricing strategy, arguing that tickets are “massively underpriced” and that fans are willing to pay more for unique experiences.

However, not everyone agrees with Rapino’s assessment. Tim Chambers, a freelance consultant who worked for Ticketmaster from 2000 to 2012, describes the ticketing industry as a “bad-news business” that only makes headlines when things go wrong. Chambers argues that Ticketmaster’s business model is designed to take the heat for the industry, with the company absorbing criticism for high prices and poor customer service.

The live entertainment industry is complex, with multiple stakeholders involved in the ticketing process. According to The Guardian, the pyramid of financial priorities in the concert business is as follows: artist, manager, promoter, venue, sponsor or partner, and ticket-seller, with fans at the bottom. This has led to a situation where fans are often priced out of seeing their favorite artists live, with many feeling that they are being taken advantage of by Ticketmaster and other ticketing companies.

The issue of dynamic pricing has also been a point of contention. This involves adjusting ticket prices in real-time based on demand, which can result in significant price increases. According to The Guardian, dynamic pricing was first introduced by Ticketmaster on a Springsteen tour in 2022, with some tickets selling for as high as $5,000. While Ticketmaster argues that dynamic pricing allows fans to buy tickets at a fair market price, many critics argue that it is nothing more than price gouging.

Some artists have taken a stand against Ticketmaster’s dominance. The Cure’s Robert Smith, for example, made tickets to his 2023 US tour available for as little as $20, adjusted for inflation, that’s half what Pearl Jam considered low in 1994. However, Smith soon discovered that Ticketmaster’s fees cost more than the tickets themselves, leading to criticism from fans and accusations of price gouging.

The debate around Ticketmaster’s dominance is ongoing, with some calling for greater regulation and others arguing that the company is simply responding to market demand. According to The Guardian, Live Nation Entertainment’s revenue hit a record $23.2bn in 2024, with Ticketmaster selling 637m tickets. As the live entertainment industry continues to evolve, one thing is certain: fans, artists, and politicians will be watching Ticketmaster’s every move.

The historical context of the ticketing industry is also worth exploring. According to The Guardian, Ticketmaster was founded in 1976 by three men in Phoenix, Arizona, who designed a computer system that would allow venues to share a database. The company grew slowly, but it wasn’t until it was bought by Chicago investor Jay Pritzker in 1982 that it began to expand rapidly. Ticketmaster’s aggressive business model, which involved demanding exclusive deals with venues and charging high service fees, helped it to become the dominant player in the market.

In 2010, the US Department of Justice approved the merger between Ticketmaster and Live Nation, but critics argued that it would lead to a vertical monopoly and higher prices for consumers. According to The Guardian, Live Nation Entertainment’s CEO, Michael Rapino, has continued to grow the company, expanding into international markets and building more of its own venues.

Ultimately, the issue of Ticketmaster’s dominance is complex, with multiple stakeholders involved and no easy solutions. However, as the live entertainment industry continues to evolve, it is clear that fans, artists, and politicians will be watching Ticketmaster’s every move, and demanding greater transparency and accountability from the company.
