Royal Mail Hits Major Milestone in Net-Zero Journey with 7,000th Electric Vehicle
Royal Mail, the UK’s leading postal service provider, has announced a significant milestone in its journey to reach Net-Zero by 2040, with the unveiling of its 7,000th electric vehicle. According to Post & Parcel, the 7,000th zero-emission version of Royal Mail’s iconic red vans was deployed at South Lambeth Delivery Office, marking a major step towards reducing the company’s carbon footprint.
The milestone was celebrated with the announcement that Royal Mail will invest in 1,800 more electric vans and supporting charging infrastructure over the next year. As reported by Post & Parcel, almost half of the new vans will be built in the UK at Stellantis’s Ellesmere Port plant, supporting British manufacturing and contributing to the company’s goal of achieving Net-Zero by 2040.
The unveiling of the 7,000th electric vehicle was attended by Lilian Greenwood, Member of Parliament for Nottingham South and Minister for the Future of Roads, who praised Royal Mail’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact. As quoted in Post & Parcel, the deployment of the new electric vehicle at South Lambeth Delivery Office, which delivers to the Houses of Parliament and addresses across Victoria, Chelsea, Lambeth, and South Kensington, marks a significant step towards reducing congestion and emissions in urban areas.
Royal Mail’s investment in electric vehicles is part of its ‘Steps to Zero’ environment strategy, which aims to achieve Net-Zero by 2040. According to Post & Parcel, the company has already reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 18% in four years, with a target to achieve a 50% reduction by 2030. Royal Mail’s Chief Operating Officer, Alistair Cochrane, said: "Today, we’ve hit a major milestone in our journey to reach Net-Zero by 2040. We’ve strengthened our position as the UK’s largest electric delivery fleet and our investment in 1,800 more zero-emission vans will help us maintain this in the future. Royal Mail is going the extra mile to decarbonise its fleet, with huge benefits for our posties, our customers, and the planet."
As reported by Post & Parcel, Royal Mail has also recently welcomed its first-ever electric trucks, in collaboration with Magtec. The trial will put the two new 19-tonne vehicles through their paces in real-world conditions, marking another significant step towards reducing the company’s carbon footprint.
Royal Mail’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact is reflected in its position as the UK’s largest electric delivery fleet. According to Post & Parcel, the company has the lowest reported carbon emissions per parcel of any UK delivery company and aims to maintain this position in the long term. With its continued investment in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, Royal Mail is setting a positive example for other companies to follow in the UK’s logistics and delivery sector.
