Russia Threatens Hockey Legend Hasek for Speaking Out

Czech Officials Rally Behind Former NHL Legend Dominik Hasek After Threats from Russian Official Dmitry Medvedev

The Czech Republic’s top leaders have condemned threatening statements made by Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, against former NHL legend Dominik Hasek. According to a report by the Times of India, Medvedev made a series of personal insults against Hasek through an aide earlier this week, which were circulated via the Russian state media agency TASS.

The comments, which included implied threats indicating Hasek “should watch the road” and take care over his drink of choice, were widely condemned by Czech officials. Prime Minister Petr Fiala termed the threats “absolutely unacceptable” and pointed out that they have to be taken seriously, considering Medvedev’s high-profile status in Russian politics.

Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský also criticized the rhetoric, calling Dmitry Medvedev’s statements “primitive behavior”. He emphasized that insulting Dominik Hasek, a widely respected icon of Czech sport and international hockey, was a bid to shut down truth-telling. “Medvedev is once again behaving as a primitive,” Jan Lipavský said on Wednesday. “This time attacking NHL legend Dominik Hasek simply for speaking the truth — the truth about Russia’s war and the misuse of sports in promoting it. Such intimidation may be normal in Putin’s Russia, not in the civilized world!”

As reported by the Times of India, Dominik Hasek has long been vocal about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the participation of Russian athletes in international competitions, including the National Hockey League (NHL). The former NHL goalie was a vocal protester of Russian players participating in international competition many years ago, and he criticized the NHL itself recently for not stopping Russian players such as Alexander Ovechkin from competing when there is war in Ukraine.

In an official communication, Dominik Hasek reached out to the International Olympic Committee and the International Ice Hockey Federation to alert them to Medvedev’s comments, referring to them as direct threats to his safety. Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakušan assured citizens that the ex-hockey great will be provided with protection if necessary.

The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the Czech Republic and Russia, as well as the global ramifications of the war in Ukraine. As noted by the Times of India, Dominik Hasek’s courage in speaking out, in the face of threats, continues to draw attention to the political misuse of sport and the global ramifications of the war in Ukraine.

The Czech Republic’s show of unity in support of Dominik Hasek demonstrates the country’s commitment to free speech and its disdain for intimidation tactics. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the international community will respond to Medvedev’s comments and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

According to the Times of India, the incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for greater action to be taken against Russia’s aggressive rhetoric and behavior. As the world continues to grapple with the complexities of the conflict, one thing is clear: Dominik Hasek’s bravery in speaking out against Russia’s actions has earned him the respect and admiration of the Czech people and the international community.

The incident also raises questions about the role of sports in politics and the ways in which athletes can use their platforms to speak out against injustice. As the world continues to navigate the complex and often fraught landscape of international relations, the story of Dominik Hasek serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up for what one believes in, even in the face of adversity.

In the words of Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský, “Medvedev is once again behaving as a primitive… This time attacking NHL legend Dominik Hasek simply for speaking the truth — the truth about Russia’s war and the misuse of sports in promoting it.” The international community would do well to take note of Lipavský’s words and to stand in solidarity with Dominik Hasek and the Czech people in the face of intimidation and aggression.
