Sean Penn Visits Ukraine, Meets with Special Operations Forces
US actor and film director Sean Penn has visited Ukraine for the fourth time since Russia’s full-scale invasion, meeting with soldiers of the 3rd Regiment of the Special Operations Forces stationed in Kropyvnytskyi, Kirovohrad Oblast. According to a video posted on the unit’s Facebook page on April 22, Penn expressed his admiration for the Ukrainian soldiers, saying: "Despite a lot of what the politicians are doing, I believe in all of you, and I’m grateful to all of you for being the very best of what we all aspire to be."
The Kyiv Independent has learned that Penn’s visit to Ukraine is part of his ongoing efforts to support the country during this tumultuous time. In February 2023, Penn presented his documentary "Superpower," filmed in Kyiv, with President Volodymyr Zelensky’s participation at the Berlin Film Festival. The documentary aims to shed light on the Ukrainian people’s resilience and determination in the face of Russian aggression.
During his meeting with the Special Operations Forces, Penn emphasised the importance of the Ukrainian soldiers’ role in defending not only their country but also the world. "You’re not only defending your country, you’re truly defending the world, and that will be known, you see, and I know you’ll prevail, and God bless all of you and your families. Thank you," he said. The Kyiv Independent understands that Penn’s charitable organisation, Core Response, has financially assisted Ukrainian refugees, further demonstrating his commitment to supporting the country.
Penn’s contributions to Ukraine have not gone unnoticed. In 2022, the Ukrainian government awarded him the Order of Merit, third degree, for his contribution to supporting Ukraine. The Kyiv Independent has confirmed that Penn is a renowned actor and director, having won two Academy Awards for his roles in "Mystic River" and "Milk" in 2004 and 2009, respectively.
The visit by Penn to Ukraine comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region. As reported by The Kyiv Independent, the US embassy in Kyiv has faced internal strain, with former official Bridget Brink breaking silence on the situation. The Kyiv Independent has also learned that US President Donald Trump’s pursuit of rapprochement with Russia has added to the complexities of the situation.
The Kyiv Independent understands that Penn’s visit to Ukraine serves as a testament to the strong international support for the country during this challenging time. As the situation continues to unfold, The Kyiv Independent will provide updates and analysis on the developments.
The actor’s comments, as reported by the unit’s Facebook page, demonstrate his solidarity with the Ukrainian people and their armed forces. The Kyiv Independent will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
