SFO probes European data centre bribery allegations

UK Company Blu-3 and Former Mace Group Associates Embroiled in Multi-Million Pound Bribery Investigation

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has launched a significant international bribery investigation into UK company Blu-3 and former associates of the global construction firm Mace Group, according to a statement released by the UK Government’s website. The probe, which is estimated to be worth millions of pounds, has led to the arrest of three individuals and the search of five properties across the UK.

The investigation, which was announced on [date], centres around allegations that individuals at Blu-3 paid over £3 million in bribes to former associates of Mace Group in relation to the construction of a data centre in the Netherlands for technology giant Microsoft. The SFO, with assistance from the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Monaco authorities, executed searches at four homes and one commercial property across London, Kent, Surrey, and Somerset, seizing evidence as part of the ongoing probe.

According to the UK Government’s website, the SFO’s operation included a search of a suspect’s premises in Monaco, which was carried out with the assistance of local authorities. The Solicitor General, Lucy Rigby KC MP, attended one of the arrests in North London, highlighting the Government’s commitment to tackling bribery and corruption. The arrests and searches are a significant development in the investigation, which is focused on alleged breaches of UK bribery laws.

The Director of the SFO, Nick Ephgrave QPM, emphasized the importance of tackling bribery and corruption, stating: "Paying bribes to do business undermines our financial markets, the reputation of British companies, and the rule of law and will not be tolerated. Today’s action is a reminder that we will take rapid and robust action to tackle suspected bribery and corruption wherever it appears – at home and overseas." This sentiment was echoed by Solicitor General Lucy Rigby KC MP, who said: "Bribery undermines the values of fairness and playing by the rules, and hurts individuals, businesses, and our wider economy."

As reported by the UK Government’s website, the investigation is part of the Government’s broader efforts to tackle bribery and corruption. The SFO’s work on this case demonstrates its commitment to pursuing allegations of bribery and corruption, both domestically and internationally. The agency’s collaboration with international partners, including the Monaco authorities, highlights the global nature of the fight against bribery and corruption.

The allegations against Blu-3 and former associates of Mace Group are serious and, if proven, could have significant consequences for those involved. As the investigation continues, it is likely that further details will emerge about the alleged bribery and the individuals involved. The SFO’s work on this case serves as a reminder that bribery and corruption will not be tolerated in the UK, and that those who engage in such activities will face the full force of the law. As the UK Government’s website notes, the Government is committed to protecting working people and ensuring that criminals are brought to justice.

In a statement, Solicitor General Lucy Rigby KC MP reiterated the Government’s commitment to tackling bribery, saying: "As part of our Plan for Change, this Government is committed to tackling all forms of bribery to protect working people and ensure criminals are brought to justice." The SFO’s investigation into Blu-3 and former associates of Mace Group is just one example of the agency’s efforts to tackle bribery and corruption, and it is likely that further cases will follow in the coming months and years.
