South Korean Navy Destroyer Docks in Da Nang to Boost Defence Ties

A South Korean Navy destroyer, ROKS Kang Gam Chan (DDH-979), arrived at Tien Sa Port in Da Nang City on May 4, marking the beginning of a goodwill visit to the Vietnamese city. The vessel, carrying 296 officers and crew members under the command of Colonel Kwon Yong Gu, received an official welcome from representatives of Vietnam’s Naval Region 3 Command, Da Nang People’s Committee, Military Region 5, the city’s Military Command, Border Guard Command, Department of External Affairs (Ministry of National Defense), Military Security Protection Department, and Coast Guard Region 2, according to a report by Vietnamnet.

The visit, which continues until May 6, aims to deepen the friendship, cooperation, mutual understanding, and exchange between the two navies, while further strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and South Korea. During the visit, the ship’s commanding officers will pay courtesy calls to the Da Nang People’s Committee and Naval Region 3. Crew members will tour local landmarks and engage in joint training exercises with the Vietnamese Navy.

The ROKS Kang Gam Chan is a 150-meter-long destroyer, 17.4 meters wide, and 38.5 meters high with a displacement of 5,500 tons and a crew of 344. It is equipped with modern maritime radar systems and an array of weaponry including missiles and torpedoes. This is not the first time the ROKS Kang Gam Chan has visited Da Nang, as it previously docked at the city’s port in September 2017, along with the logistics support ship ROKS Hwacheon (AOE-59), on a similar mission.

The Vietnamese representatives who attended the welcome ceremony included high-ranking officials from various military and government agencies. On the Korean side, the delegation included the Defense Attaché to Vietnam and staff from the Consulate General of South Korea in Da Nang. The visit is seen as a significant step in strengthening the defence ties between Vietnam and South Korea.

According to Vietnamnet, the ROKS Kang Gam Chan’s visit is a goodwill gesture aimed at promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between the two nations. The visit also highlights the growing defence cooperation between Vietnam and South Korea, which has been steadily increasing in recent years.
