Slow Horses Series 5: Everything We Know So Far
According to a report from Prima, fans of the critically acclaimed spy drama Slow Horses have reason to rejoice as season 5 is officially on the way, and it will be landing on Apple TV+ sooner than expected. The series, based on the bestselling books by Mick Herron, centres on Slough House – MI5’s "unofficial dumping ground" for spies who’ve made one mistake too many.
Since first arriving on our screens in 2022, Slow Horses has quietly built a loyal following thanks to its sharp writing and standout performances from a stellar cast, including Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Kirstin Scott Thomas (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Fleabag) and Jack Lowden (Mary Queen of Scots, War & Peace). The show has received widespread critical acclaim for its gripping storylines and exceptional character development.
As reported by Prima, series 4 left fans on edge, and with the announcement of season 5, viewers are eager to know what’s next for Jackson Lamb and his team. The cast for season 5 includes many familiar faces, such as Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, Jack Lowden as River Cartwright, Kristin Scott Thomas as Diana Taverner, Saskia Reeves as Catherine Standish, Rosalind Eleazar as Louisa Guy, Christopher Chung as Roddy Ho, Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Shirley Dander, Ruth Bradley as Emma Flyte, James Callis as Claude Whelan, and Tom Brooke as J.K. What Happened in Series 4?
Prima reports that series 4 opened with a bombing in a London shopping centre, which quickly pulled the Slough House team into yet another high-stakes investigation. River Cartwright found himself facing his past when his father, the dangerous former mercenary Frank Harkness (played by Hugo Weaving), re-entered his life in dramatic fashion. Meanwhile, River’s grandfather David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce), once a respected intelligence figure, continued to decline.
Slow Horses Series 5: Plot
According to Prima, season 5 is based on London Rules, the fifth book in Mick Herron’s Slough House series. The official synopsis from Apple TV+ states: "In season 5 of Slow Horses, everyone is suspicious when resident tech nerd Roddy Ho has a glamorous new girlfriend, but when a series of increasingly bizarre events occurs across the city, it falls to the Slow Horses to work out how everything is connected. After all, Jackson Lamb knows that in the world of espionage, ‘London Rules’ should always apply."
Fans of the books will know this is one of the more character-driven stories in the series — and it’s great news for those who’ve been hoping to see more of Roddy Ho (played by Christopher Chung). In an interview with GamesRadar+, Christopher Chung revealed, "There is a bigger focus on Roddy as there is in the book. There’s a lot more of me and I may even throw in a dance move or two [laughs]. Everyone gets a moment in the spotlight which is great but I had read the six or seven books that were out when I was cast and because ‘London Rules’ has such a heavy focus on Roddy, I was hoping we would get to season 5."
Slow Horses Series 5: Release Date
Prima reports that Apple TV+ has confirmed that season 5 will be released in summer 2025 in a short teaser. While there’s no specific date just yet, if the past is anything to go by, new episodes are likely to arrive by late July or August. In the meantime, all four previous seasons are available to stream on Apple TV+, perfect if you fancy a rewatch (or a first-time binge) before the new season begins.
