Huddersfield Town Exit Likely: Three EFL Sides Must Pounce on Sorba Thomas
Following the appointment of Lee Grant as their new manager, Huddersfield Town can now turn their attentions to what is expected to be a busy summer transfer window at the John Smith’s Stadium, and that is likely to include the departure of Sorba Thomas, according to Football League World.
The Wales international spent last season out on loan in the top-flight of French football with Ligue 1 side Nantes, who narrowly escaped relegation for a second successive campaign. The Canaries, though, have been unwilling to take up their option to purchase the 26-year-old following his temporary spell at Stade de la Beaujoire, with that option reportedly around 4 million euros.
Thomas is under contract at Huddersfield until next summer but there is an expectation that Town will still allow the former Boreham Wood attacker to depart the club this summer. Football League World has looked at three sides in the EFL that should be keen on making a move for the Barking-born winger.
Oxford United are one potential destination for Thomas. Gary Rowett took charge of the U’s in mid-December and steered them to safety in impressive fashion, following their promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs last season. The former Millwall boss is known for his rigid but immensely effective style of football that can limit the opposition very well – but Oxford supporters’ one concern would be their lack of attacking threat.
According to Football League World, an industrious player like Thomas would provide a work ethic that is needed for a Rowett side, whilst also being able to offer something extra that they may not currently possess in the final third of the pitch.
Wrexham are another side that could make a move for Thomas. The Welsh club may well be seeking to target more higher profile names, or even names that would immediately suggest a bit more quality, but Thomas would be an ideal fit for what they should be looking for this season. A winger whilst with the Terriers, Thomas is someone who has also been deployed up-front and playing in a ‘second striker’ role off a so-called ‘big man’ seems the perfect solution for Phil Parkinson.
Playing for a Welsh club is not going to harm his chances of remaining a regular in Craig Bellamy’s national team squad. As well as that, the benefit for Wrexham would be that they can lower their average age, which is already high and may even get higher with the rumoured additions of Jonny Evans and Tom Cairney.
Luton Town are also a potential destination for Thomas. Football League World believes that the Hatters should be keen on signing the Welshman, despite it meaning Thomas would be dropping from Ligue 1 to League One. Having suffered back-to-back relegations, Luton do still have parachute payments from the Premier League coming in this season and their squad already seems well positioned to launch a third-tier title challenge in the 2025/26 campaign.
They added the likes of Millenic Alli and Thelo Aasgaard to their attacking department in the winter transfer window but Matt Bloomfield liked to rotate and work with a deep attacking unit whilst at Wycombe Wanderers – and Thomas’ versatility would certainly also aid Luton’s cause, with their squad in recent seasons often lacking a bit of width in the final third.
In conclusion, Sorba Thomas is likely to leave Huddersfield Town this summer, and Football League World believes that Oxford United, Wrexham, and Luton Town are three EFL sides that should be keen on making a move for the 26-year-old winger.
