St. Louis City Fire Manager Olof Mellberg Under Scrutiny

St. Louis City SC Part Ways with Manager Olof Mellberg

St. Louis City SC have terminated the contract of manager Olof Mellberg, according to sources at GiveMeSport. Mellberg, who was appointed ahead of the 2025 season, lasted only 15 league games in charge of the club.

During his tenure, St. Louis City SC recorded a dismal 2 wins, 5 draws, and 8 losses, scoring a mere 8 goals in those 15 games. The club had shown promise in the previous season, finishing strong after summer signings Marcel Hartel, Cedric Teuchert, and Simon Becher arrived. However, under Mellberg’s cautious and defensive approach, the team failed to build on that momentum.

Mellberg, 47, has a wealth of experience in football, having previously worked with Swedish top-flight side IF Brommapojkarna. As a player, he featured in nearly 600 matches across European clubs, including Aston Villa, Juventus, Olympiacos, and Racing Santander. Mellberg was also a long-time Sweden international, earning 117 caps.

The decision to part ways with Mellberg comes as a surprise, but it is understood that the club was unhappy with the team’s performance under his management. St. Louis City SC missed the playoffs in 2024, and the club’s hierarchy had hoped to improve on that result in the current season.

According to GiveMeSport, the club’s poor form and lack of goalscoring threat were key factors in the decision to sack Mellberg. The team’s playing style under Mellberg was deemed too cautious and defensive, which failed to excite the fans and deliver results.

As reported by GiveMeSport, Mellberg’s departure leaves St. Louis City SC searching for a new manager to lead the team forward. The club will be hoping to turn their season around and make a push for the playoffs.

In related news, the 2025 MLS season has thrown up several intriguing storylines. As highlighted by GiveMeSport, some of the biggest questions looming in MLS include whether Orlando can sustain their form and make a legitimate title push, and if Vancouver can make history this weekend.

St. Louis City SC will be looking to get their season back on track and make a push for the playoffs. The club’s hierarchy will be hoping to find a suitable replacement for Mellberg, who can bring a more attacking and exciting style of football to the team.

The sacking of Mellberg serves as a reminder of the cutthroat nature of professional football, where managers are often given little time to prove themselves. As GiveMeSport continues to monitor the situation, one thing is certain – St. Louis City SC will be looking to make a significant impact in the remainder of the season.
