St. Louis CITY SC Axes Coach Amid 15-Game Struggle, Late-Season Free Fall

St. Louis CITY SC Sacks Head Coach Olof Mellberg After 15 Games

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Major League Soccer (MLS) community, St. Louis CITY SC announced on Tuesday night that they have parted ways with head coach Olof Mellberg. Mellberg, who had been in charge of the team for just 15 games, leaves the club 14th in the MLS Western Conference with a paltry 11 points from two wins, eight losses, and five draws.

According to reports from Playing for 90, the decision to sack Mellberg was not taken lightly, but ultimately, the team’s poor performances and results had not lived up to expectations. The Swedish coach had been appointed last November following a stint with IF Brommapojkarna, a first-division club in his home country. The move was seen as a gamble, given Mellberg’s limited coaching experience outside of Europe.

The early signs were promising, with St. Louis CITY SC enjoying four straight clean sheets under Mellberg. However, the team’s form soon tailed off, and they struggled to find consistency, conceding points with monotonous regularity. The ten-point deficit from the play-off positions caused alarm at the club, and it ultimately led to Mellberg’s downfall.

“The decision to part with Olof goes beyond results,” sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel told a press conference, as quoted by Playing for 90. “The success of the team was measured through a number of parameters, including the challenge to play the type of football which had made the team successful over the past four years.” Pfannenstiel’s comments suggest that the club had a clear idea of how they wanted to play, but Mellberg’s tactics and approach were not aligning with their vision.

The appointment of David Critchley, currently the coach of St. Louis CITY2, as interim coach is a temporary solution while the club searches for a new permanent boss. Critchley will be tasked with stabilising the team and providing a platform for the new coach to build on. The challenge will be significant, given that St. Louis CITY SC have scored just 11 goals in 15 matches, the joint third-worst record in the division.

Mellberg’s departure marks the end of an era that promised much but ultimately delivered little. In three seasons, the club has had three different head coaches, with Bradley Carnell and John Hackworth preceding Mellberg. The 2023 season was a highlight, with the team racking up 56 points and enjoying a historic campaign for an MLS expansion team. However, the current season has been a major disappointment, and the club will be hoping that a change in the dugout will spark a turnaround in fortunes.

As Playing for 90 reports, St. Louis CITY SC still have a chance to make a push for the play-offs, but they will need to respond quickly to any hopes of a revival. The club’s hierarchy will be eager to see an upturn in results and performances, and the appointment of a new coach will be a crucial step in that process. With the MLS season still in its early stages, there is still much to play for, and St. Louis CITY SC will be hoping that their next appointment will bring a new era of success.

St. Louis CITY SC’s next match will be crucial in determining their trajectory for the season. The team will be looking to put on a strong performance and secure a much-needed win. As the team continues to navigate the challenges of the MLS season, one thing is certain – the club will be hoping to turn their fortunes around and make a push for the play-offs.

The club’s decision to part ways with Mellberg may come as a surprise to some, but it is clear that the team needs a new direction. With a new coach at the helm, St. Louis CITY SC will be looking to implement a new style of play and secure a more consistent performance. As the season continues, it will be interesting to see how the team adapts to the changes and whether they can achieve their goals.
