Luke Littler made history at the Premier League Darts in Birmingham, securing a record fifth nightly win of the season. According to Sky Sports, Littler defeated Michael van Gerwen 6-4 in the final, having also beaten Stephen Bunting and Nathan Aspinall in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
The 18-year-old prodigy now has 35 points in the standings and is closing in on the record for most points in a season. Littler’s victory in Birmingham was a significant one, as he became the first player to achieve five nightly wins in the same season. As Sky Sports reports, Littler’s win also sees him move nine points clear of Luke Humphries at the top of the table.
In the quarter-finals, Littler came from behind to defeat Bunting 6-5, after the St Helens player had missed double 16 for a 3-0 lead. Littler then produced a superb performance to beat Aspinall 6-5 in the semi-finals, surviving a match dart in the process. As quoted in the Sky Sports article, Littler said: “I’m very happy. Obviously, the fifth win, it was going to come at some point, but it’s been a few weeks since I actually won my first game.”
Littler’s victory sets him up nicely for the Play-Offs at London’s O2 Arena at the end of the month. He now has his sights set on finishing top of the standings and believes he can stay at the top of the table. As Sky Sports reports, Littler said: “I’ve always thought in my head, the first semi-final of the O2, it’s so crucial because there’s not that big of a turnaround. To win this tonight, I’m nine points ahead of Luke [Humphries], so I’m very happy at the minute, and I’m very confident that I’ll stay at the top of the table.”
The Premier League continues on Thursday, May 8 at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, with Littler facing Aspinall and van Gerwen taking on Humphries. Sky Sports will have exclusive live coverage of the event, along with other top darts tournaments.
Littler’s win was not without its challenges, as he faced a tough semi-final against Aspinall. However, he stayed focused to land a 174 checkout and take out 46 on his favourite double 10. In the other semi-final, Gerwyn Price produced a clutch 102 finish to defeat Humphries.
Van Gerwen secured a much-needed win against Rob Cross, taking out a stellar 130 checkout and averaging 95.79. The Dutchman will face Price in the semi-finals, looking to make a second nightly final of the season. According to Sky Sports, Littler’s victory was a significant one, as he cemented his position at the top of the Premier League table.
