Two-pointer revolution: Ulster champs rewrite the rules

Donegal’s Lead Slips as Monaghan Mounts Dramatic Comeback

In a thrilling encounter, Donegal’s lead was dramatically reduced as Monaghan staged a remarkable comeback, leaving the visitors reeling and the home crowd sensing a famous victory. According to the BBC, successive two-pointers from substitute Jack McCarron and captain Micheal Bannigan within the space of 60 seconds incredibly cut Donegal’s lead to 0-16 to 0-15.

The momentum had shifted in Monaghan’s favour, with the home crowd growing increasingly vocal in their support. However, the Donegal team managed to regroup and extend their lead once again, thanks to successive scores from late inclusion Michael Langan, a largely quiet Patrick McBrearty, and substitute Jamie Brennan. This pushed the deficit back out to 0-20 to 0-16, seemingly putting the game out of Monaghan’s reach.

The Monaghan revival appeared to have been repelled when another Brennan score extended Donegal’s advantage to 0-22 to 0-17 with eight minutes of normal time left. As the BBC noted, “even a seven-point lead with that amount of time remaining is far from safe,” and the home team proved this to be the case.

In a frantic conclusion to the game, Monaghan launched a final attack on Donegal’s lead. A Ryan McAnespie point, which was a sniff of a goal chance, was followed by Dessie Ward’s second two-pointer of the afternoon, leaving only two points between the sides. The tension was palpable as the clock ticked into the final minute, with Monaghan winning the subsequent kickout and managing to work the ball to Ward once again. Unfortunately for the home team, he pulled the far-from-easy chance wide of the post.

With the game hanging in the balance, Shaun Patton knew he had to take the kickout – lest he be blown up for time wasting – and after the ball bounced over the sideline off a Donegal fist, Monaghan’s Ryan O’Toole was about to take the line ball when the hooter sounded. As the BBC reported, “Thinking, Monaghan still had a final play, O’Toole found a team-mate in close proximity near halfway but at that very moment, David Coldrick’s final whistle blew, quickly to be followed by protests from some Farney players.”

However, the BBC confirmed that the Meath whistler, David Coldrick, had followed the new rulebook to the letter, ensuring that the game concluded without further controversy. In the end, Donegal managed to hold on for a hard-fought victory, but Monaghan will surely feel that they pushed their opponents to the limit. As the BBC noted, the dramatic conclusion to the game will have left both sets of fans on the edge of their seats.
