UK Crisp Recall: Thousands of Packets Urged to be Returned Over Allergy Fears

Urgent Food Recall: Thousands of Crisp Packets Recalled Across England Due to Allergy Concerns

A major food recall has been issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) for Ottolenghi Vadouvan Pita Chips due to undeclared allergens that pose a significant health risk to customers with certain allergies. According to The Sun, the recall affects customers who have purchased the product and have an allergy or intolerance to celery or mustard.

The Ottolenghi Vadouvan Pita Chips, which come in a 150g pack size, contain undeclared celery and mustard, which are both potential allergens. Customers who have bought the product with batch codes 290525, 300525, and best before dates of 28 May 2025, 29 May 2025, or 30 May 2025, are advised not to consume the product if they have an allergy or intolerance to these ingredients. The Sun reports that the affected products were recalled by Ottolenghi, who has also reached out to relevant allergy support organisations to ensure those affected are aware.

Symptoms of an Allergic Reaction

Symptoms of an allergy usually occur within minutes of contact with the offending food or trigger, but they can also come on up to one hour later. Mild to moderate symptoms include itchy mouth, tongue and throat, swelling of lips, around the eyes or face, red raised itchy rash, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea, and runny nose and sneezing. More severe symptoms of anaphylaxis include swelling of the throat and tongue, difficulty breathing or breathing very fast, difficulty swallowing, tightness in the throat or a hoarse voice, wheezing, coughing or noisy breathing, feeling tired or confused, feeling faint, dizzy or fainting, and skin that feels cold to the touch.

What to Do If You Have Purchased the Affected Product

Customers who have purchased the affected product can return it to the store for a full refund, with or without a receipt. Ottolenghi has advised customers to contact them directly on 02074852060 or at [email protected] for more information. The Sun reports that customers can also check the company’s website for more information on the recall and other products that may be affected.

About Ottolenghi

Ottolenghi was founded by the Israeli-born British chef, restaurant-owner and food writer Yotam Assaf Ottolenghi. The company began as a small shop in Notting Hill in 2002 and has grown a cult following with its fusion food inspired by Middle Eastern and Mediterranean traditions. The pita chips are not currently listed on their website, but their Za’atar Pita Chips are available for £6.30. They also sell jars of Vadouvan spice for £5.

The Importance of Food Allergy Awareness

Food allergies can have severe and even life-threatening consequences if not properly managed. According to Allergy UK, celery allergies affect an estimated 2.8-11.1% of the European population, particularly in countries where raw celery is commonly consumed. It is essential for customers to be aware of the ingredients in the food they eat and to take necessary precautions to avoid an allergic reaction.
