Liverpool FC Captain to Receive Premier League Trophy from Legendary Predecessor
Liverpool FC’s current captain, Virgil van Dijk, will be presented with the Premier League trophy by one of his illustrious predecessors as club skipper, Alan Hansen, after the champions’ final game of the season against Crystal Palace, reports Liverpool FC’s official website.
According to the Liverpool FC website, the presentation ceremony will feature community representatives Mark and Jo McVeigh of the Owen McVeigh Foundation, who will bring the trophy pitchside and place it on a plinth for Hansen to then hand over to Van Dijk. The ceremony is set to take place immediately after the final whistle, with the players leaving the pitch while preparations are made for the trophy lift, and a stage being built before Arne Slot’s squad are welcomed back out.
Hansen, a Liverpool legend who made 620 appearances for the club, winning eight league titles – three of which were as captain, including in the 1989-90 season, which was the last time supporters witnessed the Reds lifting the top-flight championship trophy – will be making an emotional return to Anfield as part of the presentation party. As Liverpool FC’s official website notes, Hansen has recently recovered from a battle with ill health, making the presentation all the more special.
The Liverpool FC website also reports that Mark and Jo McVeigh, who started the Owen McVeigh Foundation in 2015 after the passing of their son Owen to leukaemia, have been praised for their work in the community to help create memorable experiences for families with children battling cancer. The charity has grown from strength to strength with the support of LFC and LFC Foundation, with Van Dijk also supporting its work. As a charity partner, it has received regular donations to create memorable experiences for the families in its care.
In an interview, Liverpool FC’s official website highlighted the charity’s work, stating that "Mark, Jo and the Owen McVeigh Foundation are a celebrated part of the LFC family." The Foundation has worked tirelessly to create memorable experiences for families through the Oncology ward (3B) at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
The presentation ceremony, as reported by Liverpool FC’s official website, is set to be an emotional and memorable occasion, with Van Dijk receiving the Premier League trophy from one of his predecessors, and the Owen McVeigh Foundation being recognised for their outstanding work in the community. The ceremony will be a fitting end to the season for Liverpool FC, who have once again demonstrated their commitment to supporting charitable causes and recognising the contributions of their legendary players.
As Liverpool FC’s official website confirmed, "The Reds’ current captain will receive the silverware from Hansen, one of his illustrious predecessors as club skipper, after the champions’ final game of the season against Crystal Palace."
